“Shimano Rowing is thrilled to be partnered with USRowing as a sponsor for several upcoming regattas and events in 2014,” said John Geary of Shimano Rowing Dynamics. “Every day, more and more crews across the county are moving to our rowing equipment for racing and training, so we thought that the time was right to support USRowing and their national and regional events so that we can continue to be on site at all of the major races to support the teams using our equipment from a technical service standpoint.

“These crews and rowers have made a commitment to Shimano, and we want to support them when they are competing at the most important races of the year. We also want to make ourselves available to other rowers and coaches to provide information on the performance advantages of our foot stretcher system. Partnering with USRowing provides us the opportunity to do both.”

Southern California Scullers Club in Seal Beach, CA to be the first North American Ambassador Club for Shimano Rowing Dynamics

Jill McGill of Southern California Scullers Club (SoCal Scullers) is no stranger to the rowing world.  As a 5-time National Champion junior lightweight rower, often competing in open events, her coach and dad, Dan McGill, is always looking for technical advantages to improve her speed.  Dan was intrigued with the potential of the new Shimano shoe system and installed it in her single last summer.  Jill was impressed after trying it a few days, noting that it made the application of power smoother, helping her feel the connection with her boat, which it turn made it easier to find her "swing".  She also liked that it eliminated the need for heel ties.  The SRD system includes a "Virtual Pivot" binding system and a carbon fiber shoe with a rigid sole, which allows more efficient power transfer during the rowing stroke.  Three weeks after installing the SRD system in her boat, Jill won the U19 Double and placed 2nd in the U17 Single at the 2013 Canadian Henley.  That was enough feedback for Dan to decide to outfit the entire SoCal Scullers team with SRD foot plates and shoes.  This includes Stesha Carle and Helen Tompkins, U.S. National Team members and World Championship Silver Medalists.  Stesha and Helen will both be racing in the National Selection Regattas this spring with the SRD system.

KR&ZV Het Spaarne becomes the first SRD ambassador club.

Shimano Rowing Dynamics (SRD) is proud to announce that rowing club KR&ZV Het Spaarne from Heemstede (NED) will be the first SRD Ambassador club in Europe.

The SRD foot stretcher is a unique product in the rowing market. The stretcher system is compatible with the SRD rowing shoes, which can be engaged and detached via a binding system based on Shimano’s established knowledge from the Bicycle components. The SRD foot stretcher is equipped with a virtual pivot point. This allows rowers to reach full compression more easily without building up tension in the shins and calves. A decrease in tension allows the rower to make the catch more accurate and direct. This pivot point allows the rower to wear hard soled shoes, which translates into a more direct power transfer.

Compared to the conventional stretcher, SRD offers the rower a number of benefits in performance, comfort, hygiene and safety. Where traditionally rowing shoes are fixed to the boat, the SRD shoes are the rower’s individual property, which allows each rower a well-fitted shoe.

Rutger Oldenhuis, Deputy Director Corporate Services, Shimano Europe:

“Het Spaarne was looking for a safe, trustworthy and workable solution to detach the shoe from the boat. At the same time, Shimano was looking for a progressive thinking rowing club to become SRD Ambassador. A situation in which there are only winners. As Shimano we are very proud that Het Spaarne has chosen SRD!”

In co-operation with Shimano, Het Spaarne shall equip the majority of its fleet with the SRD foot stretcher. The rowing club will purchase the stretchers and the club’s members can order their own personal rowing shoes at Shimano.

Alwin Snijder, Captain of Boats, KR&ZV Het Spaarne

“Starting the collaboration with Shimano as a SRD Ambassador Club is a wonderful opportunity to increase the safety and rowing comfort for our club members over the entire scope of our fleet. The SRD system finally gives the rower the opportunity to always use a well fitted, quality rowing shoe in our intensively used boats. As a club we are proud to be pioneers when it comes to this new development within the rowing sport.
